Breathing cold air leads to dessication of bronchial mucosa leading to degranulation of inflammatory mediators from the bronchial inflammatory cells. Since you have said that you have got the history of childhood asthma,,,I advise you to go for a simple breathing test called spirometry with reversibility test... If their is obstructive pattern, probably you need the treatment.... meet a chest physician and get the spirometry done....and a last urge plz quit smoking as it enhances any form of respiratory disease.... best wishes
