When Can Normal Eating Be Resumed After GERD Treatment?

Hi, my dr diagnosed GERD and prescribed omeprizol, 1x day for 8 to 12 weeks. I ve been on it a week. My symptoms are excessive phlem, throat clearing, mild pain at bottom of esphogus. the hearburn cleared up within the first day. I have cut way down on acid-producing foods, have been eating smaller meals and stop eating 3 hours before bed. my question is if i should eat something like tomatoes or meat, does that cause more acid to splash up my throat? How will i know if my esphogus is healed? will i be able to eat some foods in some amounts like spaghetti in the future without taking the medicine?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The gastrointestinal reflux disease is due to the regurgitation of acidic food through gastroesophageal Valve. So one has to be very careful to avoid recurrence.

Spicy food, fasting, smoking & alcohol has to be stopped completely for at least one year(after that if you want, can give a trial of these food items with medicines at hand).

Yoga exercises involving upper abdominal muscles (Bahya pranayam) can strengthen the valve.

Food allowed consists of fruits, vegetables & lean proteins like an egg. Complex carbohydrates like kay meal, whole grains like rice.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
