You did not say if it is a medical or surgical abortion, the circumstances and any associated clinical findings of relevance. Yet, I would say, in my experience, a hysterectomy is a rare necessity during an abortion. Post abortion indications for Hysterectomy are
Ruptured uterus if rought instruments, poor skills were applied, Pospartum haemorrhage if not controlled with conservative management.
Infection is not an indication in early days i.e up to a week. However after one week infections causes postpartum haemorrhage that if not controlled conservatively will raise the need for hysterectomy.
If sterilized instruments are used and skillful obstetrician do it, the chances of postpartum haemorrhage and infections are less and hence there will be less chance of Hysterectomy.
