When Is The Best Time To Take Cold Medication Before Removing A Wisdom Tooth?

Hello, I am getting my wisdom teeth removed in a little over an hour, but I have a moderate cold/cough. I was instructed to not eat or drink anything 12 hours before the surgery, but would it be safe to take a daytime cold medicine with just a sip of water?

Hi,

The advice re the use of food or fluids is to reduce the risk of aspiration of stomach contents into the lungs. It would be best to restrain from using any fluids at this stage, if the procedure was to occur in more than 2 to 3 hours, then it may be considered.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
