When Is The Right Time To Get Ultrasound During Pregnancy?
I was diagnosed with a marginal placenta previa at 20 weeks. A follow-up ultrasound has been scheduled in week 28. I have heard that an ultrasound at 28 weeks might show that it has not yet corrected itself and another follow-up ultrasound will therefore be required. I want to avoid unnecessary ultrasounds. So my question is: can I wait until, say, week 34 to do the ultrasound? Will there be any harm in waiting? I have no spotting and no other issues. I lift heavy (not too heavy) and am pretty active at this point and have had no issues. Currently at the end of week 26. Thank you!
Hi, Thanks for the query. Usually ultrasound examinations will not affect the fetus or the pregnancy. Because there is no exposure to radiation in ultrasound. With progression of pregnancy the placenta can move upwards, it is called migration of placenta. Better to undergo ultrasound at 28 weeks. By this the position of placenta can be assessed. And if placenta persists in low lying position, necessary precautionary measures can be taken. Review ultrasound at 34 weeks is needed to assess the baby growth, weight, liquor status etc and of course placental position. Better to avoid lifting weights, journey, intercourse etc. If you notice bleeding, go to hospital immediately. Take care.
