When To Start Taking Birth Control Pills?

I'm 22 and I've always had very regular period every 28 days right on the money. Well the week after my period I was suffering from alot of pain in my lower right side and went to the doctor that Thursday Oct. 14 and found out I had a "simple" ovarian cyst. My doctor thought the best treatment would be birth control pills. My last period started Oct. 1 and ending Oct. 5 and accroding to the way my cycle is I should have started Oct. 28 and it hasn't yet. Is this normal? Should I go ahead and start the birth control pills now or wait till after for my period? According to the directions I'm suppose to wait till have my period then start takin the bcp?
