Which Iron Tablets Are Recommended For A Woman To Treat Anemia?

My wife has been diagnosed as anemic. Her doctor told her to take iron tablets. He is away for the next 3 weeks and she can t remember if it was ferrous gluconate or ferrous sulfate which he recommended. Which is most common and what dose is common. She thinks he told her 300 mg per day. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic.
Therapeutically there is no difference between ferrous sulfate and ferrous gluconate as both forms of irons are prescribed for the anemia. However the gluconate form of iron is better tolerated than ferrous sulfate and may have less side effects-
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
