Which Virus Affects The Pancreas Leading To Type 2 Diabetes?

Hi Dr. Rynne, I have just come back from an appointment with my Doctor and was informed that I have Type 2 diabetes. I am a 52 year old woman, am 5 6 , weigh 114, run 3 miles 3-4 days a week, have never had a weight problem, and have been healthy my whole adult life up to this point. My parents have no health issues to speak of, my Mother is 89 years old and my Father is 94. My Doctor believes that I may have had a virus as a child, that has affected my pancreas. Do you think this is possible, and if so, what type of illness could it have been?

welcome to hcm,
According to the best of my knowledge i personally feel that the cause of type 2 diabetes is not associated with vital infection in you.
viral infection may cause pancreatitis which may be the reason for diabetes in some selected individuals.
but in your case i feel that lack of physical work and lack of exercises over a long period has eventually resulted in type 2 diabetes. most of the sugar produced in your body got accumulated and eventually resulted in type 2 diabetes.
it may be caused by some unknown reasons( idiopathic ) also
hope this explains
with regards
