Why Aluminum Magnesium Suggested To Take With Metronidazole And Cotrimoxazole ?

My nephew is diagnosed with amoebiasis.he was prescribed with metronidazole, cotrimoxazole and aluminum magnesium (maalox) all comes in syrup form. i understand the uses of metronidazole and cotrimoxazole, but with aluminum magnesium, i wonder why it is given for amoebiasis.is it because of constant passing of stools that our stomach loses alkalinity ?
