Why Am I Getting Body Ache And Shortness Of Breath After A Mastectomy?

I have had two breast cancer surgeries in the last month, first a lumpectomy then a mastectomy, on the same breast. I have felt increasingly flu-like each day since, with shortness of breath, body aches, and nausea (not to the point of vomiting). At my last dr. apt. (last Tuesday) I started Bactrim to treat a little bit of infection in my incision. Any thoughts as to why I am feeling flu-ish instead of increasingly better?? YYYY@YYYY

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It can be viral fever unrelated to the mastectomy. You can take analgesics like Acetaminophen for symptomatic relief and drink plenty of water. Check whether the wound site is infected or not, in case of infected wound, antibiotics are required to tackle the infection. If symptoms persist, better to consult a physician and get evaluated.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks.
