Often it's not the quantity of sleep that's the problem but the quality of sleep. If the sleep is not of good quality, then your brain will not get into REM sleep and thus, you won't be refreshed during the day. Unless you have narcolepsy where there is too much REM sleep invading the wakeful cycle.

You will probably need to have two sleep studies: one is a polysomnogram which is done overnight and checks for apnea or other sleep disorders. The other is a multi-sleep latency test (MSLT) checking for narcolepsy. You would need to have the first one done to do the second one.

There are many reasons to have poor quality sleep and/or daytime fatigue so the sleep studies (and a good history taking by the physician) would be enough to figure out your problem.
