Why Do I Have Intermittent Soreness On Helix Of My Ear?

I have had a sore on the helix of my ear that comes and goes. It gets red and tender. It is the size of a small pea and sometimes has a pimple like appearance. I first thought it was a bug bite. It hurts to talk on the phone and to sleep on that side. IT is bright red but not hot. Dermatologist gave me topicort for when it flares up which is only a few times a year. That usually clears it up but not this time. She said it could be viral and there really is no cure. It is intermittent but has not gone completely in two+ years. I am 69 years old.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have intermittent soreness on helix of my ear. Well in your case the symptoms are probably due to chondrodermatitis nodularis chronica helicis . It is a painful inflammatory condition affecting the ear. I would suggest you to consult dermatologist for proper examination. Doctor may treat the lesion with a cortisone injection or freeze it with liquid nitrogen to promote healing , collagen may be injected under the skin or topical 2% glyceryl trinitrate may be prescribed in severe cases to apply twice daily .For now avoid sleeping on the affected ear , wear a warm hat over the ears when outside in the cold and wind and keep it clean and dry .
