Why Does One Have A Heavy Bleeding During Menstruation?

I am 47 years old and for the past few months I have been missing my periods - it comes once and then disappeard few months. I had my period yesterday, but the bleeding is very very heavy - I am having to change the pad every hour or so. I don't feel any pain, but I am getting worried now - could there be any abnormality?
