Why Does The Pain In Esophagus Persist Like The Pill Was Stuck There ?

2 days ago, I took my pill that I ve been taking for a while now, but I only grabbed a handful of water (not even) and swallowed it down. That night, I felt pain in my esophagus. It felt like my pill was stuck. So I got back out of my bed, and drank some water. I was hoping it would get my pill to go all the way down but nothing changed. The next morning I felt the same pain. Now it s been 2 days and I m still feeling the same. It hurts when I swallow food, it takes longer for food to go down, and it feels like there is something stuck in my throat. Should I be worried at all?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The most common causes for such symptoms are as follows:
- Esophago-spasm to start with
- Esophagitis due to various reasons
- GERD that is gastro-esophageal reflux disease
- Fungal infection

This can be treated in the following ways:
- Take a PPI like Omeprazole
- Antacid three hourly
- Domperidone as motility regulator

See the results and if the problems goes away then to continue the same treatment for 2 weeks. If there is no complete relief then please consult a Gastroenterologist for upper GI endoscopy, tests of blood for diabetes and other immunity related diseases and have proper diagnosis to have a specific treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
