Why Having Throat Pain After Coughing Harder?

I've had a cold and I was coughing but not a productive cough. As I coughed harder the front of my throat started hurting and still does now a day later. It felt like I damaged my vocal cords or something. My throat isn't sore and it doesn't hurt to swallow but the front of my throat is sore to the touch?
