Hi, I have been prescribed ATENOLOL 25 MG. I do not have high blood pressure. I went to a Cartio. Dr. because I heat has been beating fast. I m told it is the electrical part of my heat, common, nothing to worry about. I have quit cafine, alchol, & chocolate, but it still beat fast. I have not been taking the pill because I did not get a good answer from the Dr. I do not have high blood pressure why am I taking it? I am afraid my blood pressure will be to low. I guess I should start taking it. Please advise. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Atenolol is prescribed to reduce the fast heart beats.

Atenolol is a 'heart selective' beta adrenergic receptor which is commonly used to treat high BP (hypertension), arrhythmia (increased and irregular heart beats) and other conditions.

It is the best drug to use in your case because you are suffering from palpitation apparently caused by fast and/or irregular heart beats and this drug is used to slow the heart down with a low dosage.

Your BP may remain unaffected however if you feel dizziness, or syncopal attack, you should consult your treating doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
