Why Is Doxepin Prescribed For Chronic Folliculitis?

My dermatologist has prescribed this medication doxepin because I have severe chronic folliculitis on my scalp. I am already taking lexapro and lithium. Why would she prescribe an antidepressant for my condition. I do have trouble sleeping and my scalp nearly drives me crazy. She said it would help with the itching. What do you think

Hello,

The dermatologist hasn't prescribed it for its antidepressive effect, she is correct in telling you that doxepin has a good effect on relieving itching, so has prescribed it for that purpose. Of course, since you are taken an antidepressant-like Lexapro caution is needed, but I assume she has prescribed you a low dose, dosages used for itching are smaller than those for the antidepressant effect.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
