Why Is PET Scan Recommended When Diagnosed With Malignant Pleural Effusion?

My son s mother-in-law was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Malignant Pleural Effusion and given 4 to 8 weeks. I am interested in knowing what this is and what is done to treat the patient. She has been told she is terminal. She is to see the Oncologist tomorrow and have a PET scan. If she is now terminal what is the purpose of the scan at this late date?

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
PET scan may help to identify the lesions clearly and also serve as an extension work-up.It will help to show if any metastasis. However, if terminal, radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be considered.Just be calm and meet the Oncologist for evaluation.
Hope this will help
Best regards
