Why Is Heart Cardiac Catherization Done?

i went to heart doctor for a stress test. His assistant performed a sonogram test and said you have a weak heart. and i need to see the doctor, He never came in exam room.He and i had a brief conversation very uninformative. They want to schedule me for Heart Cardiac Catherization.I feel like i could have done the stress test. Is the test the only way to diagnose my heart? its very expensive are there other test that could possibly be done first ? confused

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
You first need the stress test to see if there may be a major blockage of one or more of your coronary arteries. If there is, then you need the catheterization to determine the amount of blockage and to see if you either need stents or coronary bypass surgery. The results of an echocardiogram alone are not sufficient to warrant immediate cardiac catheterization.
