My mum is icu and has been sedated for two weeks. She has sepsis and severe pneumonia. Today they stopped her antibiotics as the microbiologist said she does not require them now she is doing so well. Her sats are all good. Today they reduced her sedation with a view to remove the ventilator. She did not respond after 5 hours she was very sleepy. What could be the reason for this?
Thanks for your question on HCM. In my opinion you should for 6-7 hours more. As prolonged sedation require more time to recover. And she is sedated for better oxygenation. It is very difficult to achieve patient's co-ordination with ventilator if patient is conscious. So sedation is required to achieve acceptance with ventilator. So wait for few more hours. She will be ok.
