Why Is The AST And ALT Elevated?

Hi Dr. My AST and ALT are 311 and 215! WHY! My Dr. was concerned and wants me to stop all meds and take another Hepatic Panel Blood Workup in a few weeks. I have just take 50000 Units of Vitamin prescribed by my Gyno and I take a 500 mg of hydrocodone per day (some days only one or none) because of surgery for a Right Calcaneous Heel Fracture 8 months. I am 62, have Osteoporosis and am taking PremPro - that is it. Except for occasional valium for chest pains on my right breast/chest bone! Already had a chest xray and mammogrophy - both are normal. Thanks Petra

Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.
AST and ALT are sensitive indicators of liver damage or injury from different types of diseases or conditions and medications are possible cause of it as you have mentioned. . So the next step is to look for certain liver damage and most common cause is fatty liver disease. It should be confirmed by ultrasound. Other causes are viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, medications, alcohol intake or autoimmune diseases. To verify exact cause, US, bilirubin levels and tumor markers should be additionaly done and then appropriate treatment can be started.
I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
