Why Is The Formation Of Pus In The Incisions Which Are Tender After The Surgery For The Detached Ligament In The Ankle?

9 weeks ago I had surgery to repair a detached ligament in my ankle. The stitches that were used were supposed to dissolve. At my 4 week post op check when the cast was removed, the incision was healing nicely but where the sutures were it was very red, raised and tender. The doctor said the swelling would subside if I kept it elevated more when I voiced my concerns over the phone last week. He said it was likely I had a reaction to the sutures and I should not ever have the dissolvable sutures used again. I am not due to see the doctor again for 2 more weeks. Tonight one of the incisions had some puss that came out. It is not hot to the touch or any more sore than it has been for the last 4 weeks. I have started physical therapy and the therapist has suggested that it be iced twice a day. She was very surprised that there was so much swelling and redness when she saw me last week for my first evaluation.

Hi,

Possibly, you are facing infection of the incisions, confirmed by the pus coming out. I'd suggest to call your doctor again and schedule an emergency appointment as you need to take oral and local antibiotic treatment together with drainage of the pus correctly.

All the best!
