The instances of heart attacks is more in males simply because women are protected by the oestrogen hormone. Oestrogen stabilises and protects the lining of the arteries. After women reach the menopause the instance of heart attacks converge to roughly the same as men because once a women reaches the menopause the oestrogen levels decrease. There are other factors, but this is the main factor.
