Why My MCP Joint Is Large And Painful?

I jammed my right thumb and my mcp joint hurts and I can't give the thumbs up sign my joint is farely largerthan the one on my opposite hand I went to the emergency room and they referred me to the orthopedics does this mean I will need surgery to fix this
