Why Was Omeprazole Tablet Prescribed Post Hip Replacement Surgery?

I recently had a hip replacement operation and on discharge, omeprazole 20mg capsules were prescribed for me by the anaesthatist, but I am unsure why. I suffer from HBP, cholestrol (altho under control), arthritis, never suffered from heartburn, so am at a loss to know why it was prescribed for me. I have not taken the tablet as yet. Can you advise if I should be taking this tablet.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI,
Welcome to HCM,
I read your query and i appreciate your concern regarding this issue.

If you were not suffering from any stomach problem previously then surely he had prescribed you omeprazole as prophylactic medicine.
Because after your surgery you will be on high potency painkillers or other medications which will effect your stomach.
Omeprazole will be helpful to take with other medicine.
I would suggest you to take it as prescribed by your doctor.

Hope so it will be helpful.
You can write again in case of any query or follow up.
Wish you good health.
Regards
