Hello,

You have a chronic infection. You are advised to get clinically examined by a gynecologist or infectious disease specialist. Get done vaginal culture for fungus and bacterial pathogens. Also get done culture sensitivity for BV, trichomoniasis testing. Panel tests for vaginitis, STD testing should also be done.

The male partner is advised to use antifungal cream (clotrimazole) for 1–2 weeks even if asymptomatic. He should use condoms until both are clear. Maintain genital hygiene but don’t over do with the washing and cleanliness. Soft, loose-fitting cotton clothes are the best until recovery. Daily probiotic supplements (oral or vaginal) will help with healing and to restore balance. Avoid unprotected sex during treatment.

Your treatment will depend on the infection diagnosed. Some self-treat “yeast” but actually have bacterial vaginosis (BV), aerobic vaginitis (AV), desquamative vaginitis, or even lichen sclerosus. You are advised to get all tests done first, before taking oral medicines or applying ointments. Chronic infections may take a longer time to be treated.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
