i am a smoker who has c o p d , i am currently on probation and am therefore required to submit to random drug testing. i take only two medications; levothyroxine for hypothyriodism, and primatene tablets which help to manage the symptoms of the c o p d . i informed her that i was taking these medications , and was told that as long as the meds were non narcotic, there was nothing to worry about . i was later informed that i had failed a test (saliva method) testing positive for amphetamines. she also said that others do not test positive who take pseudoephedrine, and their related products. ephedrine ias a bronchodilator, not a nasal decongestant , i know that . i also explained that i must show i d and sign for these medicines , although they are over the counter.she has still threatened to violate my probation if i cannot provide proof that the ephedrine is to blame. i do not take medicines unnecessarily, i take far fewer than the recommended doses which are on the package (no more than 8 doses/24 hr. period) i take perhaps 1 tablet per day sometimes 2, sometimes , not at all. a 24 ct. package last me about a month. is there a credible source that can verify that drugs containing ephedrine will cause a false positive? i have spoken with a doctor who told me that it would, but would not go on record as such. there are plenty of sites that say that ephedrine will cause a false positive, but most are not credible
