Will STD Test Be An Alternate To Test Cell Changes Instead Of Smear?

I recently attended the colposcopy clinic and have received a copy of a letter sent to my GP stating that the biopsy was normal, but due to my past history of 3 previous abnornal smear tests - Cin 1 Dyskaryosis. I will need to have another smear test in 12 months time. I have been married for 35 years and have only had the 1 partner, my husband has said he has not had any other sexual partners since we have been married. I would like to know if there could be any other explanations for these cell changes and if we should both go for an STD check if the answer is no?

Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

CIN 1 indicates cervical dysplasia. These cell changes are almost always associated with High risk HPV types i.e types 16, 18, 31.
HPV is transmitted sexually from an infected sexual partner.
Since you have never been involved sexually with anyone else other than your husband, therefore likely you got the virus from him.
HPV can remain clinically silent for months and even years and it is possible that your husband acquired it from someone else before he got married to you and subsequently passed it on to you.

Regards
