Will Cataract Surgery Assist In Reading Better?

I am contemplating cancelling my catarac surgery. I have 20/50 in my left eye. I am farsighted so I do not need glasses to read. I have been told that I have cataracs and need to have the surgery. Also, my father had glycoma and I have been tested and have been told to keep being tested. My question is by having the catarac surgery, how is it going to help me read any better? What purpose is this surgery going to do for me?

Dear patient.
Greetings from health care magic!!! I am Dr Thakker and shall be answering your question.

Cataract is a condition wherein the lens in the eye gets opacified. As a result less light rays reach the retina and this leads to blurred vision. The opaque lens tends to disperse light leading to coloured haloes. If cataract is not operated upon the lens gets hypermature and then dissolves in situ leading to complications. Also long term suppression of light in the cataract affected eye leads to retinal suppression and amblyopia. The amblyopia is irreversible. Hence I would recommend cataract surgery with implantation of an IOL. Once the cataract surgery is done there is an improvement in the vision as the refractory error due to the opaque lens is corrected to normal. However the retina in the pre-op state should be normal for optimal benefit.

I hope this helps you out. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to write back to me.

Yours sincerely,
Dr Thakker.
