Will Contraceptive Pills Taken Within 24 Hours After Having Sex Avoid Pregnancy?

Hi doctor,I had sex two days back and it was for the very first time, unprotected sex , unplanned so i had taken a pill yesterday, idoz 72 , within 24 hours of having sex , my major concern is that i have no fixed date for my menses, the date keeps changing every month. Earlier it was irregular menses but now it happens regularly but not on a fixed date. So will my pill be effective? Will it prevent pregnancy? And should i again take the pill. I dont plan of havingsex any further.

Hi,
Thanks for the query.

Contraceptive pills taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex are able to prevent 90% unwanted pregnancies. They act best if taken within first 12 hours but taking within 24 hours is also fine.

Since you have irregular cycles, predicting ovulation would not be possible.

The chances of pregnancy are very very low. So I guess you do not need to worry. If you want a confirmation, get a pregnancy test done 3 weeks after unprotected sex to rule out pregnancy.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Thanks for using HCM.
