Will Experiencing Pica During Pregnancy Harm The Baby?

Hi,
I am 36 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing pica for the past 2/3 months for car washing sponges. I am ingesting them although chew them until they lose their sponge and are a gritty /powerdy type of substance. My midwife does not seem concerned but I am. Will this harm my baby?
Thank you

Hi,
Welcome to HCM!

Yes, you need to stop eating it as soon as possible. Car washing sponge are definitely not good for your health. They might even cause infection in your body, ultimately risking the life of the baby.

I'd suggest you to visit a Psychiatrist/Psychologist at the earliest. They will help you in stopping this habit.

Hope I've answered your query. Feel free to ask if you have any doubts.
Wish you good health.
With regards,
Dr. Sridhar
