Will Scar On The Chin After Stitches Heal On Its Own?

My daughter had 6 stitches under her chin. We were told to keep them in 7-10 days as they were dissolvable. Well, they never disolved so we went back in on day 11 to get them removed. It looks the stitches left some indentations on her skin. Will those fill in over time or will they scar as I have seen after further researching that stitches should come out sooner?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Whether stitches are removed early or late does not have anything to do with its leaving scar or indentations on the skin. Stitches are to be removed after the healing of the surgical site has reached a point where stitches are not needed anymore to keep the two cut surfaces in contact with each other.

Usually, the stitches leave scar in the chin area. I could advise you better if you had mentioned the material that was used to take the stitches. Usually, post operative consequences depend on the material used for the suturing. Newer material leave very light scar that does not compromise with the aesthetics of the patient. Whether scar remains or not also depends on the technique used by the surgeon to take the stitches as some techniques leave extensive scars while others don't leave them.

However, if the scar remains and is compromising aesthetics of your daughter, then you can go for laser treatment later in her life, when she is around 15 years of age, to get the scar removed. You can consult a cosmetic or oral & maxillofacial surgeon regarding the procedure.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. I wish your daughter heals well.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
