Will Smoking Affect The Healing Of The Wound?

my fiance had a motorcycle accident and fractured his entire pelvic and sacral area they put in a titanium plate and two giant screws he is a pot smoker and smoker he is in wheelchair for now not walking yet but he gets a blood thinner shot on daily basis how does the smoking of those things affect him

Thanks for your query..Smoking affects the healing of wound for sure.
1) It decreases the blood flow to the injured site(causing reduced availability of oxygen,Nutrients etc).
2) It delays the granulation tissue formation and also its quality (inhibits collagen synthesis and maturation).
3)Smoking also decrease the efficacy of blood thinner shots ,which are given to prevent thrombo-embolic episodes.

Make sure your treating doctor know about this for drug dose adjustments if needed and also advice him to atleast temporarily avoid smoking.Hope i have answered to your query.I wish him a good health and speedy recovery.
