If you are pregnant, every time you smoke a cigarette, it cuts down oxygen to your unborn baby and exposes them to a cocktail of chemicals, including chemicals that cause cancer. There are some of the many damaging effects of cigarette smoke on the fetus include: reduce oxygen supply due to carbon monoxide and nicotine, retarded growth and development, increased risk of cleft lip and cleft palate, decreased fetal movements in the womb for at least an hour after smoking on cigarette, impaired development and working of the placenta, changes in the baby’s brain and lungs.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Heang Chan Raksmey, General & Family Physician
