Hello,

I'm sorry to hear that your friend's migraine medications have not helped.
There is no significant adverse affects to stopping migraine medications, other than if they have been helping her headaches may get worse.

Depending on what the medications are they may need to be stopped slowly. These include medications such as gabapentin, amitriptyline, nortriptyline, topiramate - stopping these could lead to unwanted adverse effects. It would be advisable to have her discontinue the medications under a doctor's supervision to be safe.

There are a few never medications that have come out for migraines which include ajovy, emgality and amovig which work in a different way than all prior migraine medications and have had good success in individuals with migraines that have not been well controlled with other medications. Another option for her would be botox if she hasn't tried that already.

I hope this helped.

Sincerely,

Kristoffer Nissinen, MD
