Good Day! So happy to hear you feel you are in good health! With regards to cholesterol it does sound like you have a genetic factor contributing to your woes. You say that diet has been determined not to assist in lowering your cholesterol and to truly verify that myself I would have to see your
lipid profile and how they approached trying to lower it.
However, your question is if continuing at 10 mg
lovastatin will eventually lower your "cholesterol" (
LDL, Triglycerides and
Total Cholesterol), my many years of experience say 'no' in your situation. However, there are different statins, are you sensitive to all of them? Dr. could try switching statin, one option.
I suggest that a re-evaluation of your profile be done, another medication tried and perhaps another attempt with diet such as adding soluble fiber to suck up the cholesterol, adding
Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Can you tolerate a therapeutic dose of nicotinic-acid as an add-on? Also, if triglycerides are a problem I tend to have more success with patients if I ask them to stop drinking juice, sugar and high glycemic foods along with the other modifications. Sometimes we can add a program rather than focus on taking things away to fix a problem, but fix it you must for a healthy heart!
I hope I have answered your question satisfactorily. Cardiovascular Nutritional Medicine is a specialty of mine along with
Diabetes and Obesity. Please come back if I can help you again. Good Luck. Kathryn Shattler,MS,RDN
