Will Taking Lovastation 10 Mg Reduce My Cholesterol Level?

I am female, 54 yrs of age, with high cholesterol, but otherwise in very good health. It has been determined that diet will not lower my cholesterol level...I started taking 10mg lovastatin, but after 3 months my number only dropped to 271 from 291 and my doctor wants me to up the dosage to 40 mg. I experience side effects with 10mg and do not wish to go to that high of dosage. Will continuing at 10mg lower my number?

Hello and thank you for using HCM.I carefully read your question and I understand your concern. I will try to explain you something and give you my opinion.

You should know that cholesterol target levels depends on some factors like your age and other associated rics factors like hypertension, diabetes, smoking and hereditary history of high cholesterol levels.
Normal cholesterol level should be below 180 mg / dl and for ldl col below130 mg / dl.

Your cholesterol reduction is realy low under treatment so it is mandatory to rise the dosage.
If you have been under 10 mg we can try to go up to 20 mg and try a little bit hard whith your diet.

I will advise you to avoid high cholesterol food, fast food, pizzas, sweeties and to have regullar physical activity minimaly 40 minutes every day.

If we don't have results in this way than it will be mandatory to rise the dosage even more.
If you experience side effects from your current medication itsis possible to change it whith other class.

Hope I was helpull.
Best regards.

Good Day! So happy to hear you feel you are in good health! With regards to cholesterol it does sound like you have a genetic factor contributing to your woes. You say that diet has been determined not to assist in lowering your cholesterol and to truly verify that myself I would have to see your lipid profile and how they approached trying to lower it.

However, your question is if continuing at 10 mg lovastatin will eventually lower your "cholesterol" (LDL, Triglycerides and Total Cholesterol), my many years of experience say 'no' in your situation. However, there are different statins, are you sensitive to all of them? Dr. could try switching statin, one option.

I suggest that a re-evaluation of your profile be done, another medication tried and perhaps another attempt with diet such as adding soluble fiber to suck up the cholesterol, adding Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Can you tolerate a therapeutic dose of nicotinic-acid as an add-on? Also, if triglycerides are a problem I tend to have more success with patients if I ask them to stop drinking juice, sugar and high glycemic foods along with the other modifications. Sometimes we can add a program rather than focus on taking things away to fix a problem, but fix it you must for a healthy heart!

I hope I have answered your question satisfactorily. Cardiovascular Nutritional Medicine is a specialty of mine along with Diabetes and Obesity. Please come back if I can help you again. Good Luck. Kathryn Shattler,MS,RDN
