Will The Base Joint Crack In Thumb Heal By Putting Tape Around?

my son broke his thumb at this base of the thumb joint yesterday. Actually, the urgent care doctor said it was cracked. Should I take him to a pediatric doctor just to make sure it is not near the growth plate. The doctor just taped around the top of his thumb and said it would take 6 weeks to heal?
