Hi,

Noted the history about your son having had grommet in ears for some time and the Doctors are now advising to get these removed as there is an infection.
The grommet is a foreign body hence can act as a nidus of infection hence should be removed after the reason is fulfilled.
Grommet act as a breathing tube for middle ear when there is blockage of Eustachian tubes due mostly to adenoid hypertrophy or infection.
Since there is an infection in middle ear or mastoids it is better to get the tubes removed.
Get an appropriate treatment for adenoids and Eustachian tube dysfunction.
Proper antibiotic, decongestant, anti-inflammatory medication.
Once the infection is settled the hearing should be normal.
Get Audiometry done if required.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
