Will There Be Elevation In Blood Sugar Levels During Viral Infection?

How common is it for blood glucose to be elevated during a viral infection? I am a type 2 diabetic whose blood glucose is normally very tightly controlled (my last A1c was 5.2%). I felt under the weather, possibly feverish, last night, am achy today, and my glucose was 140 mg/dL after breakfast -- I m rarely above 110.

Hello,
what an impressive HbA1c for a type 2 diabetic!
You haven't mentioned the exact timing of self-measurement so I could not comment with confidence on your glucose value but 140 is not a high value anyway. 140 would be high if it was a fasting one. If it is 1 hour after breakfast then it's OK. If it is 2 hours after breakfast it is still OK but also indicative of your diabetic situation.
Actually your values are so "normal" that I'm ready to begin doubting about the diagnosis!
Any kind of inflammation affects glucose regulation. Even a painful tooth or a slight injury that got inflammed will cause increased blood glucose levels. The effect on glucose will depend on the severity of diabetes and the severity of inflammation. A well controlled patient will respond much better than a neglected diabetic patient.
A 10-15% increment is a fair estimation for you case.
I hope I've shed some light on your situation.
If you need further clarifications on the subject, I'll be glad to provide them for you.
Keep up the good work on your glucose regulation!
Kind Regards!
