Wisdom Tooth Appearing, Causing Problem In Molar Tooth, Very Painful. Is Pain Due To Wisdom Tooth?

Hi, A few months ago i went to my dentist for a check-up. I was concerned about two things. 1). my wisdom teeth had started to make an appearance 2). my top right molar was really painful when i would bite down on some crispier/tougher foods. He x-rayed my molar and found it to be a perfectly healthy tooth, no decay or sign of it so far... He suggested that he thought my wisdom tooth coming through at the same side was putting pressure on the other teeth as it forces it s way through, this making my molar sensitive to bite on. However in the last couple of weeks it has gotten so bad i cannot chew anything on the right side of my mouth, because of this tooth. Unless pushing hard on it, or chewing, i feel no pain...is it just my wisdom tooth causing the problem? I am worried it may have become something more...

Hi,

Thanks for posting the query,

Wisdom tooth are mostly tilted and impacted in the jaw bone which leads to pain .
This may even exert pressure on the adjacent tooth making it sensitive .
The area is difficult to clean so it invites bacterial infection leading to redness , inflammation and swelling of the overlying gums .

Consult an Oral surgeon and get clinical evaluation done .
Take an OPG x-ray.

At home maintain a good oral hygiene .
Use saline water gargles 3-4 times a day.
Use 0.2% of chlorhexidine mouthwash gargles twice daily.

Hope this helps out .

Regards..

hi, thnx for your query, main problem lies in oral hygiene. this is becausecleaning of wisdom tooth is more difficult.hence food gets accumalated and the gingiva[gums] gets swollen. this condition is called PERICORONITIS.visit your dentist for this. he will advice for removal of that particular tooth if the problem is severe . antibiotics , painkillers, good oral hygiene will also subside the condition. thnx, hope this helps.

Dentist Dr. Khushboo Bhatia's  Response
There are various reasons for the tooth pain which is there on biting down. Decay, a loose filling/crown and/or a cracked tooth are possible causes.See a dentist to diagnose the problem before the pain worsens. Decay will need to be removed, and a loose filling/crown replaced by your dentist. If the pain is caused by pulp tissue damage, your dentist may send you to an endodontist, a specialist who will perform a root canal treatment to clean out the damaged pulp, disinfect the root canal and fill and seal the remaining space to save the tooth. A cracked tooth may be difficult to treat not only if it involves the pulp, but also depending on the location and depth of the crack.

With out seeing the Xray's and doing the clinical examination it is difficult to diagnose.

Dentist Dr. Neha Gupta's  Response
Hello,
I am Dr.Neha Gupta (dentist) and am glad to address to your query here.

Wisdom teeth pain symptoms, caused by their ‘impaction’, is a common problem. These ‘third molars’ are the last teeth to erupt into the mouth. They most commonly appear between the ages of 17 and 24, but can also erupt much later.
Symptoms are common here as they are the last molars to enter the mouth, there is often not enough space for them to fully come through.
The cleaner the area and your mouth in general is kept, the less likely that pericoronitis and other problems will occur.
Therefore general oral hygiene measures should be adhered to, including flossing in the area of the wisdom tooth and regular use of mouthwashes.

Take care and please keep me informed of your progress at healthcaremagic through my profile directly.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query,
When a tooth is unable to fully enter the mouth, it is said to be "impacted." In general, impacted teeth are unable to break through the gums because there is not enough room.
If left in the mouth, impacted wisdom teeth may damage neighboring teeth, or become infected. Because the third molar area of the mouth is difficult to clean, it is a site that invites the bacteria that leads to gum disease.
If after discussing your situation with your family dentist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon, you decide to keep your wisdom teeth, be sure to take particular care in cleaning and flossing your teeth, especially the molars. Your third molars must be professionally examined regularly and x-rays of your wisdom teeth should be taken every year to make sure that the health of your teeth and gum tissue does not change.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful

Dear friend.

Thanks for sharing your concern.

According to your history, your impacted third molar is causing pressure on other teeth.

As you have already got the x ray done, showing no decay, then definitely, it is your third molar causing pain and infection.

Due to its location, it becomes difficult to clean that area, therefore i would advise you to do warm saline rinse after each meal so that food debris do not get accumulated there.

In this case, you can wait and watch for a week more and revisit your dentist for clinical evaluation.

what did your dentist say?Is there enough space in the jaw for the third molar to erupt comfortably?

If not, then it is better to get that extracted,to prevent recurrent infections.(pericoronitis).

For pain you can take painkillers after consultation.

Hope it helps.

Thanks.

Take care.
