Would Lipitor Be Effective For Cholesterol Problem?

My cholesterol level is 223 w/ bad cholesterol at 153. My doc has suggested 10mg of lipitor daily but I am concerned about some of the information I am reading about the drug. I try to watch what I eat most of the time so I'm not sure that diet is the solution. What is your opinion about taking Lipitor for my current level?

Hi,

As any other medication Lipitor also has side effects. Actually there are not that frequent.
If you don't have very high cardiovascular risks you can try dietary and lifestyle changes up to 3 months. If you don't achieve good cholesterol levels, then you can try medication.

Wishing you good health

Cardiologist Dr. Dr. ERVINA SHIRKA's  Response
Hello and thank you for using HCM.I carefully read your question and I understand your concern.

I will try to explain and give you my opinion.

Normal cholesterol level should be below 180 mg/dl and ldl below 130 mg/dl.

You should know that cholesterol target levels depends on some other factors like your age and other associated rics factors like hypertension, diabetes, diagnosed coronary artery disease or familiar histori of dyslipidemia.

The factors that I mention before are considered coronary risc factors and if you have them the cholesterol level should be even below 70 mg/ dl for ldl col.

Normaly the fist tentative is dietary modification but sometimes this is not enough and medication is mandatory, especially in cases that I mention before and familiar cases.

So my opinion is that you should continue your treatment whith lipitor becouse keeping down cholesterol is very important and side effects are rare.

Hope I was helpful.Wish you good health
Best regards.
