How To Take Care Of A Lip Injury In Children?

Our granddaughter ran into a pole playing sports and her top teeth went through her lip requiring stitches inside and outside the lip. There was no care prescribed except for an antibiotic. Should she be rinsing her mouth or using something on the outer lip.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. As stitches are taken, the bleeding must have stopped. She can rinse her mouth lightly without giving much pressure on the lips.

To answer your second question, there is no need to apply anything on the stitches. The stitches will heal the injury in some days. Also, as antibiotic is prescribed, there are less chances that the injured area will get infected.

You can apply ice over the stitches. If she is complaining of pain, acetaminophen can be given for relief.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish your granddaughter feels well soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
