Passing Out After Quitting Smoking

A 65 yr. old man friend of mine was recently diagnosed with a prolapsed heart valve. The doctor promptly suggested that he quit smoking. The man has quit smoking for brief periods in the past before this diagnosis and within 3-4 days would pass out. Please explain this condition. He is apprehensive to quit with out supervision and fears he may pass out while driving or working on machinery.
