Although he had little more than my description to go on, Dr. Das was correct in that this was not a continuation of the Coxsackie virus. I was able to get my son into a local pediatrician and he was dx'd with Impetigo. A strong course of antibiotics and he should be fine. He's shown improvement after just 3 days.
