The simple answer is unnecessary.
If there is a proven deficiency of any mineral or vitamin in the form of a report from a standard laboratory or clinical features identified by a physician, then they are to be supplemented. If there is no sign of deficiency, most clinicians would not supplement. However there are certain medical conditions where insufficiencies are reported concurrently. In such a case the treating physicians will supplement the vitamins and minerals as part of therapy.
For a healthy person most vitamins and minerals are part of the balanced diet that they consume. For a pregnant woman, supplementation with Folic acid, Iron, Calcium and Vitamin B12 is necessary.
If a person is working out and trying to build muscle mass, creatine supplements are optional. The same elements can be found in the diet after due consultation with dietitian.

For elderly people, calcium supplements are commonly prescribed by doctors to compensate loss of bone mass.
There are certain groups who fast to lose weight and take necessary nutrients in the form of supplements. Doctors advise them to be careful about extra supplements which may sometimes prove harmful.
Vitamin D supplements are necessary for all pregnant and breastfeeding women, children aged six months to five years, and people aged 65 and over. We commonly see Vitamin D insufficiency in people who are home bound and do not get enough exposure to sunlight. It is necessary to measure their Serum Vitamin D3 stores and supplement adequately.
Omega 3 Fatty acid supplements are part of scripts for many persons suffering with coronory heart disease.
People who have chronic diarrhea, food allergies, food intolerance or a disease of the liver, gallbladder, intestines or pancreas will need supplements as they may not be able to absorb certain essential nutrients.
Vegeterians may not get necessary Vitamin B12 and Folic acid in their diet and hence they may need those to be supplemented if they exhibit certain clinical features.
In summary, do not consume supplements without the knowledge or prescription of your healthcare provider. There are certain supplements which hinder the action of other important medicines that you may be taking. The same holds good for herbal supplements.
