When you talk about Tampons we remind women. Tampons may be taboo amongst women in some societies but hygienic in the modern world.
Let us talk only about hygiene here.
Always make sure to choose the right size of the tampon for the vaginal opening that you have. A bigger thing is uncomfortable and smaller one is leaky.
Choose to use the right material tampons. Cellulose is the most common material used to prepare tampons. They are more absorbable than rayon and cotton fiber tampons. However they have a raised risk of toxic shock syndrome.
Do not use tampons if you are not comfortable with them. Use them according to your preference not because your friends do them. There are other options, available options which are safer and convenient such as menstrual cups and soft cups. A lot of you may be using external products like pads during periods.
Use your first tampon on a day when your flow is regular, not at the very start or end of your period.
You should make sure to remind yourself to change tampons frequently. If you are forgetful and busy person who never cares to change the tampon you should prefer other alternatives than tampons. It is also important to keep checking the tampons while at work by pulling out in the rest room and checking the soaks. Remove or change them whenever you need. Even if it does not soak it is better to remove them after 8 hours. Staphylococcal infections are common with Tampon use and if you leave them over certain period there is a risk of toxic shock syndrome.
Always start using your first tampon on a day when your flow is regular, not at the very start or end of your period.
Do not use tampons if you have vaginal dryness or ulcers on your private parts.
