Brief Answer:
No allergy can not cause slow digestion.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.

Answer to your 1st question.

Yes, allergies can develop without symptoms of sneezing, runny nose and watering of eyes. Allergy is caused by allergen. And not all allergens produce same allergy. If you are having allergic rhinitis then you will have above mentioned symptoms. But if you had food allergy then such symptoms can be absent.

Answer to your 2nd question.

Yes, allergy can cause feeling of choking. It is due to severe bronchospasm. This can cause difficulty in breathing and may gives feeling of choking. Feeling of Fluid in back of head is mostly seen in sinusitis, not in allergy.

Answer to your 3rd question.

No, allergy can not cause slowed digestion. If food allergy is suspected then patient is having diarrhoea after taking allergic food.

Answer to your 4rth question.
For testing, you need to consult good accredited laboratory where allergy testing is done. Testing for food allergen is done in selected laboratories. So you can get it done there.
About your specific dog , whether allergic or not, please reply me these answers.
1. Which breed you are having?
2. What is your report for allergic testing in general for dogs?
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

I am having tingling pains in my head, headache in back of head, hair hurts and a constant feeling of fluid flowing down my throat. Also having difficulty with chronic constipation, reflux. All of this came upon me during, and after, 3 rounds of shingles from July -Dec and has continued to make me miserable long after the shingles rashes are gone.
I have No typical allergy symptoms. My allergy testing for dog, in general, was negative. My dog is a shorthaired, red, female Doberman.
I did show slight reaction to dustmites, mountain cedar and juniper, but none severe. I do, however, live in the mountains of NM surrounded by all the above items and have lived here for 10 years now.
I appreciate any enlightenment you may offer me. i am literally beginning to question my sanity, but these pains and symptoms are really happening and i cant get relief. Tried all nasal allergy sprays, neti pot, steam, allegra, benedryl, claritin to no avail. Accupuncture gives some relief for day or 2, as does sucking on lozenges but nothing makes this flow and pain go away.

Brief Answer:
Allergy is less likely the cause for your symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
Thanks for the detailed history and description.
Allergy is less likely in your case as your symptoms are not suggestive of routine allergy.
And no need to worry for slight reaction to dustmite. As this normal thing.
I also don't think you are having dog allergy.
I want to know few more things about you.
1. Where do you work?
2. Have you consulted ENT doctor for this?
3. Have you ever undergone sinus endoscopy?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

I am self employed as a pilates trainer so im in an office studio. I live in the mnts. Of New Mexico at 7000 feet surrounded by pine and cedar forests. I have seen ENT who says nasal/throat clear. Xray & CT Sinuses w/in normal limits w/small R turbinade and no sinusitis. I am wondering about viral allergies. Ive read viruses, like shingles, can cause them. What are your thoughts. My head & neck hurting & the constant flow down throat bring up anxiety for me and has made it hard to function normally. Migraines? I just am baffled & frustrated.

Brief Answer:
You might be having GERD.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
Yes, you are right about shingle's allergy.
But it is very very uncommon after 3rd round of shingle.
In my opinion you may have GERD ( gastroesophageal reflux disease ).
It is due to laxity of gastroesophageal sphincter.
Because of this the acid of the stomach tends to come up in the esophagus and cause symptoms like fluid flowing down throat, constipation etc.
So please let me know
1. Do you feel burning pain in center of chest and upper abdomen?
2. Have you ever undergone upper GI scopy?
3. Are you taking any drugs for constipation or reflux?
Iw be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

1. I have pain in my Cervical spine, On Left side, and pain in my mid thoracic region posteriorly which feels nerve-like, stinging/burning. And when I lean back on something like recliner, car seatback, the flow feels like it increases as if it is coming up throat from below. This pain is pretty pervasive, as well. I also have some pain in front just below sternum and in on left side rib cage.

2. I had EGD in Dec. 2014 at Mayo clinic which they said I have 2mm hiatal hernia and that it should not be causing me troubles. No H-pylori, neg. stomach biopsy, but some fluid in stomach and esophageal reflux/globus. They also gave me Advair and Albuterol for what they called a-typical asthma, whatever that means! I use Albuterol as needed occasionally and it is one thing that does seem to help open airways and give some relief. I have not taken the Advair because I am really having difficulty going from a strong, healthy woman to someone needing to take all kinds on drugs w/their own side effects. I know asthma can improve w/biofeedback, relaxation and exercise, all if which I'm doing more of but still no change.
2a. Had colonoscopy in 2010 and it was clear of polyps, but some diverticuli, and more intestinal folds than typical.

3. I have been taking 1 Prilosec 20mg, after evening meal, since Dec. along with
1-2 Gaviscon before bedtime. Probiotic daily as well as digestive amino acids 2x/day before meals. All to no avail. I just can't seem to get relief and it's taking a terrible toll on my attitude and life.

I do not really seem to have any more or less pain after eating. As I said, it is pervasive no matter what I eat. I never truly feel hungry anymore but I do make myself eat because I need to. Also, eating seems to stop the flow temporarily and makes me feel better for that time. But then it comes right back. I eat 2-3 small meals per day. Lots of warm fluids and water.

So I have had much expensive testing, they gave me scripts which I have followed and nothing seems to be getting better. I have changed my diet, cut out coffee, soda, sugar(mostly), eat a lot of soups, warm stuff feels best, but am getting no real relief?
Is it possible to have reflux so bad that I am actually allergic to, and aspirating on, my own digestive fluids? And if that is possible.... What can I do about it? This is truly a miserable way to exist and I'm beginning to feel hopeless. I appreciate if you have any helpful recommendations. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
No, reflux can not cause allergy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
And thanks for the detailed history and description.
No, reflux can not cause allergy. But yes, it definitely worsens the asthma. Reflux disease actually cause micro aspirations and these micro aspirations can cause constant irritation and inflammation in the lungs. Thus , they actually worsen the underlying asthma.
By your description , I think you are having GERD ( gastroesophageal reflux disease ).
And you are doing all the things for reflux and still not improving.
I want to know
1. Are you very emotional person?
2. Are you living stressful life?
Emotions and stress have great impact on GERD.
So please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

I have been a relatively balanced, healthy and happy person up until these shingles occurred from July to Dec. the pain & other symptoms of nervous system feeling off kilter, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing and severe constipation/digestive issues, headache and nerve pain that grew more intense w /each bout, and now seems that some of those symptoms have become permanent. I do know i am feeling anxiety and some depression now but i did not have them prior to all of this. We do not lead a stressful lifestyle. If anything, our lifestyle may be a little too laidback and quiet for me . We make ends meet financially, i have a very supportive, loving husband and family. Something that has been stressing me is comming to terms w/aging & ailing parents, seeing friends of my same age getttin ill & some dying unexpectedly. That has been my biggest stressor w/in the past year.
If You belive this is Gerd, not nerve or shingles encephalitis, . would it cause the chronic headaches , nerve pain and flow in the otopharyngeal area ? What would your treatment recommendation be since Prilosec znd gaviscon are not really making any headway? Would you suggest i try the Advair along w/Prilosec and gzviscon? Could thiese treatments actually cure thungs or just manage them? what are long term side-effects of these treatments. And are there any more permanent options , like surgery? PleAse tell me your recommendations. I really need to get some relief. How do you feel about anti-anxiety or anti-depressants? I dont want to mask symptoms as they continue to get worse but i need some relief. Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
Yes, you should start anxiolytic and antidepressan

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
By your history and description, in my opinion you are having too much stress due to your illnesses. And all your symptoms are actually worsening by your stress.
Chronic headache and nerve pain are seen due to stress.
Your uncontrolled GERD is also likely to be due to stress.
And no need to worry much long term side effects. As they are safe in long term use.
And no surgery is available for this.
I advice you to consult psychiatrist and get done counselling sessions.
Try to identify stressor in and start working on its solution.
Anxiolytic and antidepressants may also needed.
I think, just by avoiding stress , your almost all problems will be solved.
Have you ever consulted psychiatrist?
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

What are anxiolytics? Is that like Xanax? Are you suggesting that the pain is creating the anxiety/depression or the anxiety/depression is creating the weird pains? Because, as I said previously, I wasn't depressed/anxious until the shingles and their complications. I have never been to a psychiatrist and will consider that after ruling out all physical possibilities first. I'm not against the use of those types of drugs but I do believe they mask symptoms without healing them. It's possible that's what I need right now.
I realize this next question would be a rare thing, (but the word rare means that it does actually occur at times) is it at all possible that this could be a CSF leak brought on by the shingles, or the fact that I live at high altitude? How would one be tested for that? Thank you.
Thanks.

Answered by Dr. Drkaushal85 (55 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
MRI brain with contrast is needed for CSF leak.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
I was trying to say that the shingles made you anxious and nervous and worsens all your symptoms.
Yes, xanax is having alprazolam and it is anxiolytic (anti anxiety).
And yes, you are right about ruling out all organic causes first and then suspect psychological causes.
About CSF leak, this is extremely rare complication.
You need MRI brain with contrast to rule out this.
Have you ever undergone MRI brain with contrast?
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

Thanks for your quick reply and all of your help thus far. I do agree that I am having anxiety/depression but as I said it wasn't until after the shingles seemed to bring on all of these weird symptoms.

I realize CSF is rare, however, do you agree that some of the symptoms I am experiencing could be indicative of CSF leak possible brought on by complicated shingles and/or high altitude living?

I appreciate your input. Thanks.

Answered by Dr. Drkaushal85 (4 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Yes, CSF leak can cause headache.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
Yes, CSF leak can cause headache, similar to what you are having.
So there is possibility of CSF leak.
You can get done MRI brain with contrast to rule out this.
But, honestly speaking, it will come mostly negative for CSF leak.
Do consult psychiatrist also for anxiety and depression.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
