Brief Answer:
Cortisone shot can be effective.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for posting your query on HCM.
I appreciate your concern for your wife.

It appears that she is suffering from post-traumatic arthritis.

Inj Cortisone given into the joint (intra articular) is effective in reducing the pain and swelling if other measures like NSAID pain killers, exercise and strengthening of the muscles around the joined did not relieve the pain.

Given by a skilled orthopedic surgeon, Cortisone injection is quite effective in relieving the pain and the swelling will less complications.

Hope this answers your query.
