Can HIV Be Contracted Through Unprotected Intercouse?

default
Posted on Thu, 4 Feb 2016
Question: Respected Doc,
i am 39, living in XXXXXXX and happened to have unprotected intercourse with a 37 year old married woman on 30 sep. we both took HIV combo test same day and were negative.
After that we had unprotected intercourse again on 29 dec and 02 XXXXXXX Between 30 sep to 02 XXXXXXX i didnt have any contact with any one else. however, the female had intercourse only with her husband (40 yrs) at the average frequency of thrice per month. i am straight, no drugs use and so is the female, as well as her husband. HIV status of her husband is not known to me though she says tht he doesnt indulge in any high risk behaviour.
However, i am now very anxious now about my risk of contracting HIV from this exposure, considering the worst possible case of she being infected by her husband after september and thereafter the virus being passed on to me. I m losing my sleep over it and can take a test only after few weeks. However, i just want to know
(a) what are the chances of transmission of HIV from female to male if she is postive; and
(b) What are my chances of contracting the virus in the scenario i have described.
I know the question are more theoritical and answer is of hardly any value till i get tested, however the question is a result my extreme anxiety on the issue.
Regards
doctor

Brief Answer:
Risk is 1 in 300 to 1 in 416 chances

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Your query is specific and you seek answers regarding transmission of HIV in a receptive penile vaginal intercourse under circumstances if she is confirmed HIV positive and the chances of you getting HIV in the scenario described above.

2. The risk of HIV transmission if she is confirmed to be HIV positive is about 1 in 900 per sexual act. Therefore if she is HIV positive and you had unprotected sex with her 3 times till now then the risk is 1 in 300.

3. The risk of contracting HIV in the above event where her HIV status is not confirmed is 0.08% which is equivalent to 1 transmission per 1,250 exposures. Therefore if her HIV status is not confirmed then the risk of transmission from 3 sex events is 1 in 416 exposures.

In conclusion the risk from 3 sex events above can be from 1 in 300 if she is confirmed HIV positive to 1 in 416 if her HIV status is not known. This is theoretical figure and is derived from research.

Hope your query is answered.
