HSV 2 is usually transmitted by close sexual contact. HSV 2 can be transmitted by clitoris coming in close contact , specially so if there has been exchange of secretions.

After an initial outbreak, are all subsequesnt outbreaks the same, i.e. - will you have same number of lesions in the same places, or can you just have 1 or 2 lesions without any pain?

HSV 2 infection is known to stay dormant for long term with acute exacerbation occurring in between. Every episode is new episode and the lesions vary overtime, the number of lesions vary overtime. Usually lesions of HSV are usually painful at time of eruption, its very unlikely that HSV lesion could be painless. If the lesion are due to HSV or other cause will depend on good clinical examination.
